Whether you are looking for a change of career, a new opportunity or just throwing around employment ideas, you may not have thought about becoming self employed as a window cleaner. We shall discuss some of the key things that must be considered before making such a career decision.
It may seem obvious that the role of any cleaner is simply to clean windows, but there are other aspects of the job that are less obvious which you may find unappealing. For example, cleaning guttering or tower blocks will require you to work at extreme heights and this work is not for the faint hearted. There is also the fact that you will be required to work outdoors all the time, regardless of cold, wind or rain and on average a window cleaner will need to work between 40 and 50 hours a week to make a decent living.
The job is not for everyone, and if the above has not put you off then the best way to really test whether you are suitable for this role is to actually get a part time job cleaning windows first, before committing any money to the project. Another advantage to doing this is that if you have no experience of window cleaning you will have to learn how to do the job properly and this is by far the best way.
The benefits to this role are numerous. You do not need a huge amount of experience to start with, and although professional qualifications in window cleaning do exist, there is no requirement to have any. Start up costs need not be huge, as many window cleaners have started out with just a bucket of water and a squeegee.
Normal self employment benefits are also relevant to this trade. There are few people would not relish the opportunity to be in charge of their own destiny, to choose when and where they worked, to take holidays when they wanted and to not have a dragon of a boss to report to.
There are of course a few pitfalls which have to be avoided too. The cost of purchasing equipment and a vehicle if necessary can be considerable for the more ambitious cleaner. Actually finding sufficient customers to make the venture profitable is again a key consideration, as is the hiring and firing of employees if appropriate. On top of this there is also the paperwork and business planning involved, which often detracts from the time that can be spent out doing the basic job at hand.
It is clear that there are a great many things to think about before becoming self employed as a window cleaner, and before committing to this career change much investigation should be undertaken.
