All You Need To Know About Elliptical Trainer Machines

by Chris Channing

Since the year 2004, the world has been blessed with a low-impact alternative to running and jogging. The form of exercise, know as elliptical training, has become so popular that gyms everywhere have purchased machines that feature the new type of workout.

When you take up running as a hobby, you have to learn how to run and under what posture. Otherwise the method of running could ruin key areas of your body such as the ankle or knee. Even with all the precaution in the world, the shock damage you receive each time your foot slams on the ground will add to the wear and tear of your lower body. Elliptical machines are better, as your feet never leave the pedal.

Like the treadmill, it would be a poor idea to use the machine for strength training. The elliptical machine is almost exactly like the act of running- which we all know is great for a cardiovascular workout that does little for muscle building. If you do want to build muscle, it is recommended you look in other machines or methods instead- yet keep the elliptical training in your workout routine as well.

When you want to build your upper body and look good, you won’t just target your biceps. The same idea applies to working out on an elliptical trainer. Such machines will have settings that allow you alter things such as speed, incline, and stride length. Alter these regularly to target different areas of your lower and upper body. Targeting a specific area is fine, however, if you truly need to target a problem area.

Manufacturers like to tout the fact that using an elliptical trainer correctly can promote better balance and posture. Tight-rope stunt artists agree that the more you practice your balance, the better you will become. Elliptical machines require balance to operate, so in time your balance will see an improvement. The improvement may not be so drastic that you can walk a tight-rope, but it will be nice to have more balance when going about your daily activities at work and home.

Elliptical machines can be inexpensive if you find a good home model. Stay away from commercial models that are built to withstand years of constant abuse day in and day out- odds are you won’t need that sturdy of a model and the price difference is going to be drastic. From several hundred dollars up to a few thousand, your choices are plentiful enough that you can get exactly what you need.
