Aspects In Map Illustration Design For Businesses Explained

    By Chris Channing | September 7, 2009

One that can’t find you, can’t give your business any revenue. This idea has led to a large interest in map illustrations, which allow clients to find your business without having to deal with hard to read maps. It saves your clients time, and can even brand your business more effectively.

In developing your own illustrative map, you will need to first develop a clean legend key. The key will show the reader what different symbols, lines, and other shapes mean in your map. The key should be placed in an easily noticed area. It is often set to contrast with the rest of the illustrative colors so it is the first thing the reader sees.

Pick a color scheme early on and stick to it. Buildings, landmarks, roads, public transit, rivers, and other milestones in your map will need their own color. In some instances, you may even need several colors for one category. You could use different shapes of one color to indicate different types of roads, for instance. It’s best to keep the colors as simple as possible.

Your map illustration should be seen as a method of branding your business- so also investigate options in creating some form of logo or mascot to include on the map. The ideal logo would be set apart from any other logos or mascots you have seen. Including your logo in the legend as a symbol is another great way to show off your branding while also being discrete about it.

Sometimes things change in an environment, and your map can become quickly outdated. Whether you design the illustration or you hire someone else, push to have the map done in vector format. A vector format can easily be changed and re-sized, while a raster format will not be able to in all cases. An easily edited file should always be on backup in case a landmark, building, or road in your area changes enough that it could cause problems.

A website your company has on the Internet will benefit nicely from having a map illustration. With services like Google Maps, you could even tie your own illustration into their service to find directions and estimated time of arrival. Technology is great, but don’t shun print advertising. Get several hundred brochures as well and pass them out freely. You will see that they will bring repeat business in a majority of cases.
