Dealing With A Fish Or Shellfish Food Allergy

If you have an allergic reaction to fish, there is no point in chancing anything. You have to learn how to be careful, ask about ingredients at restaurants, and shop at the grocery store. Even avoiding something like fish can be hard to do without training.
Even health items that are meant to help you could seriously handicap you. It isn’t uncommon for a multivitamin to contain fish ingredients. Fish is actually very healthy for your body, so long as you don’t have an allergy to it. It’s that reason that many manufacturers will include it as an ingredient. Also triple-check to make sure you aren’t poisoning your body with your vitamin intake.
Going to a restaurant that primarily serves fish would seem like a bad idea, but you could contest the fact that such restaurants have other types of food as well. That can be the case, but at the same time you can be susceptible to what is called cross contamination, which basically describes the act of fish being present in a non-fish dish. Anywhere fish is prepared can increase your odds of this act.
Always raise the issue of cross contamination, even when the restaurant you go to isn’t themed around fish. You have to be very direct with the server that you can’t have any bit of fish, lest you go into an allergic reaction. Since some servers can be young and only in high school, you should stress this fact in a very serious tone to convey your message.
It’s best to plan ahead and be safe when eating out. If worse does come to worst, it’s possible your breathing could become shallow as swelling occurs in your throat. Eventually this could lead to your suffocation. Carry around a breathing tube just in case, and while not pleasant, having a knife around for an incision is also a good idea in case the breathing tube has been presented too late to the one suffering from the allergy attack.
Fish allergies are strange. Some have reported that they have developed an allergy to fish, even when they had no history of fish allergies through their own account and the account of their family history. If you aren’t sure whether or not you have an allergy, and have history of having allergies in your family, going to a doctor before eating new types of fish or shellfish in particular is the best way to avoid danger.

Allergies of any type take a lot of responsibility to handle. For younger children it can be a troublesome burden, in which case adults and family members need to take action and plan out a safe meal plan for the youngsters.
