Emergency Planning And Using A Portable Home Generator

We were lucky during the last winter that our power never went out and while being lucky is an admirable thing being organized is much better. I am currently deciding on a portable home generator for our home so we can cope even when the power goes down in winter.

Like everything in life, a portable home generator is a compromise of possibilities compared to price. A full size generator system that would supply emergency power to meet all our needs would be very expensive but most power outages don’t last more than a few days max so we have to decide what electrical equipment is essential and what we could manage without.

The power supplied by small portable generators is enough to supply lighting and power the furnace but you could not realistically use it to heat the home with electric heaters. LCD lighting uses less energy so we will have a series of lights connected to an emergency supply of batteries which should run the lights for many hours before we need to use the generator.

Preparing for emergencies requires you to imagine the worst and figure out how you would deal with it. Having a portable home generator is an important part of that emergency planning process.
