Fundamental Concepts In The Need For Online Directories

by Chris Channing

Way back in the history of the Internet, directories were the main way of finding new information. Since search engines have become popular, their need has diminished. That isn’t to say that they aren’t still needed- because they are in fact a distinguished part of the Internet today.

Knowing the telephone number of a friend or family member was once something that led to the usage of a phone book. Today technologies such as mobile phones and internal memory let you keep track of such things automatically. But when you need to search for someone in particular, you are no able to go online and visit services create by telephone companies that allow for public searching of records.

Businesses will submit their resources to the Yahoo! directory in order to take advantage of the massive amount of traffic it can send. The Yahoo! directory is quite expensive to apply for- around a few hundred dollars per listing. To make matters worse, this is the fee only used to pay for a review. If your service doesn’t pass the review, you will not be refunded and you will not obtain a listing.

Some directories instead try to index the entire Internet, minus all the less influential websites of course. Projects such as the DMOZ project, also known as ODP or the Open Directory Project, is one such service that attempts to do this. The ODP is a good resource if you need to find something on a particular subject, and don’t want to trust a search engine with results that could end up in a wrong lead or a bad website.

Getting a legal aid for whatever reason is a serious subject. You wouldn’t want to leave your search up to a search engine, which can throw bad results your way. Instead you will need real results from a professional directory. Some directories may allow you to read quick biographies or comments others have left as well, so you can better judge which lawyer you would like to spend your time and money on. Not doing so could leave you with a poor attorney.

If you own your own website, you will want close contact with Internet marketing companies. The only good way to get a fair idea on your choices is to look through directories. While looking at advertisements and through search results can lead to results, directories present more information to you than advertisements can. After all, it’s best to read the facts than to read persuasive text put out by marketing moguls.

Closing Comments

Search engines have come a long way in giving great results, but as of yet they can’t compare to the prestige that Internet directories can offer. You should still make use of search engines to expand your results, but also consider using Internet directories as well.
