How Elderly Individuals Can Build Muscle With Rowing

by Chris Channing

The elderly have few options when they want to go to the gym. Regular strength training can sometimes be too hard for an aged body. The treadmill is always a great alternative, but it doesn’t provide strength that the elderly should build. One exercise, rowing, changes all of the rules.

The key aspect of rowing that makes it perfect for the elderly is that you can move at your own pace. Even if you don’t have any experience in strength training at all, you can get started with rowing for sport and hobby. Those new to the sport will want to start on the rowing machine first, and leave embarking on the waters until the basic motions are down.

We can all say we have had a sore back at some point or another. It’s just a common ailment that the elderly seem to have more often than younger people. The elderly should investigate rowing as a long term solution, since it will align the back with good posture observed. It also strengthens the back- shielding it from harm and pains associated with simple lifting.

Strong exercise done consistently can improve the immune system in addition to any other effects it provides. The immune system is necessary for guarding your body against attack from outside forces. Without it, you would surely become sick, and even critically so. The elderly have weakened immune systems, so building it up with exercise isn’t a bad idea.

Rowing doesn’t have to steal the show- it can also be the opening act. You can use a rowing routine to warm yourself up for another routine you plan to do later. Rowing at a slow pace will cause your muscles to loosen up, promote circulation, and make you feel better in preparation for something else. Whether for something fun like a massage, or something serious like another workout, rowing can be the perfect opening exercise.

Rowing machines are great fun, but also consider going outside to use a real rowboat if you haven’t already. A real rowboat takes a lot of skill to maneuver, so you should practice at least for a few months before even thinking about it. Build up your strength and then look at a few clubs in your area. If you don’t have any, talk to a friend to see if they would be interested in testing the waters with you.

In Conclusion

A rowing machine can be obtained for an inexpensive price, or be rented through a gym. Also remember that your own rowboat can be obtained through practice. This could be a start of a great relationship between you and the open waters.
