Proofing Your Plants Against Extreme Winter Temperature

by Chris Channing

Gardening is a hard job near the end of Fall once Winter starts to show signs of coming. Winter isn’t too friendly to plants and flowers that require a warm climate to thrive. Few plants and flowers can survive all by their own without the help of a generous gardener to give them a boost until Spring.

You might not have to work towards a regiment of proofing your garden if you have obtained the correct plants and flowers. Some flowers such as the Iris is a good example of how such a petite flower can defy the extreme temperatures of Winter. Plants like this can often be left alone for the whole of Winter, but some extreme cases may still require that you intervene with the general health of the plant.

You should have the foresight to plan ahead for Winter when you plant during the Spring. Always pot plants when you are able- especially if they don’t do well during cold seasons. That way you can easily transport the plant at a moment’s notice when the time comes. Your garden can take a long time to move via this method, so it isn’t a good alternative for large operations.

You can protect bulbs by simply digging them out of the ground, cleaning them, and putting them in a dry location. Preferably, you should put the bulbs in a bag that is sterile enough to keep the bulb healthy all Winter long. Leaving bulbs in the ground would otherwise freeze them and render them lifeless come Spring.

Fruits and vegetables are most affected by the frost of Winter. And because they are not easily transported from your garden, you will just have to find a way to bring the defensive measures to the plants. One method is to get some newspaper and put it around and directly over the plants. If you don’t have newspaper you can use a similar material, or you can find special material from home and garden stores.

Trees are your worst problem when Winter comes around. Trees are hard to cover since they can be so tall or mangled. Your best bet is to get a base of straw or mulch to cover the bottom of the tree, and keep it supplied with plenty of water. You may even wrap rope around the tree, or use a special mixture to help protect the bark.

Final Thoughts

Even though the Winter cold can be a formidable force to be reckoned with, you can outsmart it with the ways of the expert gardener. Gardening will take time, and you will no doubt see losses. Just learn from your mistakes and do whatever possible to improve.
