Internet servers are classified according to how they function and the features they are able to support. As a webmaster you should already be familiar with the types of Internet servers so that you can pick a cost-effective option for your websites. In addition, picking the wrong server type could prove to be a handicap.
The entry-level server type is shared hosting. Shared hosting puts you on a server with anywhere from a few to large amount of other webmasters. The main reason you would go for shared hosting is because it is insanely cheap. At the same time, having other webmasters on the server means you could have downtime associated with problems with other websites on the server.
A type of shared hosting that gives you more control is known as a virtual private server. A VPS is the next upgrade from the shared hosting environment, but only necessary if you actually need the freedom that a VPS provides. A VPS isn’t always any more stable or powerful than your typical shared hosting environment, so if what you need is power then you may have to upgrade to a dedicated server plan.
A dedicated server is the cream of the crop, but also the most expensive on average. Dedicated servers allow you complete access to the server and how it operates. Because it is seen as more of an option for webmasters who know how to run a server, most dedicated servers are not managed unless you pay for an upgrade.
Some web hosts also offer something called a reseller hosting plan. Don’t be confused, technically every server type could be a reseller hosting plan. You are granted access to a Web Host Manager, or WHM, that allows you to allot different accounts to different limits of bandwidth and disk space usage. It’s unlikely to see such a thing on shared environments, but VPS and dedicated servers will often have this by default.
Don’t judge your options based solely on types of servers. Dedicated servers do appear to be the holy grail of web servers, yet that isn’t always true. A VPS can outperform a dedicated server, and even the lowly shared server environment can outperform other server types if the host limits the amount of webmasters on each server. The real thing to consider is what your desired host is selling, at what price, and whether or not the server is managed.
