Using Your Deep Tissue Massage Device For The First Time

by Chris Channing

Getting that deep tissue massage from a masseuse will cost a lot of money- something you should already know. Lots of consumers are switching over to hand-held deep tissue massage devices. They come with instructions that should be strictly followed for safety and comfort.

Even the masseuse you have gone to before will sometimes pinch your skin- sometimes it is unavoidable. A deep tissue massage device shouldn’t do so, however. The most common problem faced comes about from applying pressure to the device. A well-made percussive massager will be able to work under its own weight- and won’t need any additional weight to operate. If you do feel pinching, make sure you aren’t applying pressure.

Anything that runs on electricity will emit heat- this is common knowledge. The heat must be dissipated in some form, which usually is just released into the air and any skin the device is in contact with. Don’t worry if the device does seem to be warming your skin- this should be normal. The device can overheat if broken, but internal circuits should be able to sense this and shut off appropriately.

A deep tissue massage therapist will change areas every so often to let the muscle settle, and to massage new muscle in the mean time. When you are using the device, it can be easy to leave the device on a certain area too long. Keep track of time and move the device around every minute or so to prevent any irritation to your epidermis layer.

Because a deep tissue massage requires actual tissue to work with, it would be poor judgment to use the device on an area that is bony. Generally the arms are a poor area unless you have a thicker build, or the device is small enough and geared towards such an area. It’s best to stick to the back, legs, and feet for your massage. Other areas are questionable, and should be looked up in the manual.

A percussive massage doesn’t always feel great, as sometimes tissue may be knotted, but never should the device put you in extreme pain. If you do feel a great amount of pain, you should take the device off and consult a physician if the area is normally an area that is acceptable to massage. There may be an underlying cause to the pain that a doctor can troubleshoot further.

Final Thoughts

There is no better medicine for an ache than to get a true percussive massage. Just make sure that you go about the process of massaging your muscles the correct way. Read more about the process in your device manual and through reading material found in book stores.
